What Size Violin Should I Get?

What Size Violin Should I Get?

The violin comes in eight different sizes: 4/4 (also known as full size), 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/10, 1/16, and 1/32. The 4/4 size is the largest, while the 1/32 size is the smallest. Adults, typically aged 11 and above, use the standard full-size violin. For children, it is recommended to determine the violin size through measurement.

To determine the appropriate size, you can measure the length between your neck and the middle of your left-hand palm. The size determined by this method should be the largest size that you should use.

However, many teachers prefer to measure the length from the neck to the wrist. This method provides a more comfortable size for students to hold while playing.

The image below illustrates the lengths associated with each violin size. You can use your preferred measurement method to determine your length and find the corresponding violin size.

Note: When deciding between 3/4 and 4/4 sizes, if the measurement allows for a 4/4 size, it is more cost-effective to choose that size, as it eliminates the need to purchase a larger size later on.
